Don’t get caught on thin ice this winter!!!
FREE Creek and Waterways Awareness Program

Central Lake Ontario Conservation is pleased to, once again, offer the FREE Winter Creek and Waterways Awareness Program to schools within its jurisdiction, from January to February.  Tragically, each winter, children and adults drown in Ontario ’s creeks, ponds, lakes and wetlands due to inconsistent ice cover caused by moderate temperatures, salt from roads and warm water currents in lakes and streams.

“As part of Central Lake Ontario Conservation’s role in watershed management, and the lead flood advisory agency, we have a vested interest in the public’s safety,” says Patricia Lowe , Director of Watershed Stewardship, Community Outreach and Communication.  The program is free to grades 4, 5 and 6, and is designed to alert students to the potential dangers of winter conditions.

“Our conservation areas and valley lands are great places to hike and explore in winter, but they can pose a risk when flooding, heavy rains and snow melt cause ice cover to thin, water to move quickly and shoreline areas to become unstable,” adds Lowe.  The 1 hour program is packed with interactive, curriculum based learning activities presented by staff environmental instructors. Students will hear about the Central Lake Ontario Conservation’s public safety flood warning system, understand the effects of hypothermia and experience just how cold water can be.  Parents are encouraged to promote this program to their schools, as a proactive step to ensure their children and their children’s friends have the tools to make good decisions and stay safe this winter.
