April showers have led to May flowers and now everyone is thinking about getting their lawns and gardens ready. Did you know that your yard work may affect the wetlands in your neighbourhood? Central Lake Ontario Conservation invites the public to an information open house on backyard green living within the Black/ Harmony/ Farewell Creek watersheds. Tips will be provided on living next to a wetland, native plant gardening, natural lawn care, solar heating, rain barrels and composting. The open house will take place on Thursday, May 13th from 6:30 to 8:30pm at the Hampton United Church Hall at 5454 Old Scugog Road in Hampton. "If you like to work in your yard, you will not want to miss this event," says Diana Shermet, Natural Heritage Resource Analyst with Central Lake Ontario Conservation. "Wetlands provide many benefits important to the watershed health, such as, flood prevention, water filtration, recreation opportunities, and habitat for wildlife. Although people are more aware of how their actions affect the watershed in which they live, wetlands still need our help. Learning how we can reduce our daily impacts can make a difference." Along with Central Lake Ontario Conservation staff, local environmental organizations in attendance including Sciensational Sssnakes with their live reptile and amphibian displays! This event will be fun for the whole family. The wetland program is made possible through the generous support of TD Friends of the Environment Foundation, The McLean Foundation and the Region of Durham. For more information on the open house or directions contact Diana Shermet at the conservation office (905) 579-0411, ext. 107 or email: dshermet@cloca.com.
