Volunteers Needed To Help Plant A Pollinator Garden
Saturday, October 27th - 9:00am to 11:00am, Purple Woods Heritage Hall (Google Map)

Volunteers are needed to assist Central Lake Ontario Conservation staff in planting a pollinator garden at Heritage Hall, Purple Woods Conservation Area.  This event will take place on Saturday, October 27th from 9:00am until 11:00am.   Activities will include planting a variety of native perennials. We recommend gardening gloves, a good planting shovel and or a hand trowel.  This event is offered to families, garden enthusiasts and conservation area visitors and is sponsored by TD Friends of the Environment.

“On this day, we will be enhancing the grounds around Heritage Hall to not only be beautiful, but provide a food source for various pollinators like butterflies, bees and birds,” says Cathy Grant, Education Instructor with Central Lake Ontario Conservation.  “Anyone thinking about adding native pollinator plants to their own gardens will get some great hands-on experience and learn about native plants.  Pollinator gardens provide an important source of nectar for many of our native bees and butterflies.”

If you are available for an hour or two please register online for the event or contact Mr. Jamie Davidson at the Central Lake Ontario Conservation Office (905) 579-0411 ext. 114.

Durham Children's Groundwater Festival's
Family Day

Saturday, November 3rd- 10:00am to 2:00pm, Purple Woods Heritage Hall (Google Map)

Did you know that a person living in Durham Region uses on average more than 230 litres of water a day!  Join Central Lake Ontario Conservation at Purple Woods Heritage Hall on Saturday November 3rd for our 15th anniversary Durham Children’s Groundwater Festival Family Day and find out more amazing facts about our local water resources. This is a FREE event and it’s happening from 10:00am to 2:00pm.  Since our first Festival in 1998, we have had more than 60,000 grade 4 students from Durham Region schools participate in activities that teach them how to become better water stewards.  We completed our Festival in September, but wanted to share the experience our students have with our community.

We have a sample of hands-on activities from our Festival to get you involved in conserving, protecting and improving our water resources here in Durham Region.  Families, parents, siblings of past, present and future grade 4 student participants are welcome.  High school students will be demonstrating the activity centres and garnering some community service hours.  It is rain or shine, cold or warm, so dress for the weather, most activities are inside.  There is plenty of free parking and a wonderful new accessible trail to experience the Oak Ridges Moraine and our sugarbush.  You are welcome to bring a picnic lunch, just make sure you follow your Ecoschool litterless lunch program guidelines and take your lunch waste home with you.  We will supply the picnic tables and the views.

For more information please contact Annette MacDonald at the Central Lake Ontario Conservation office at (905) 579-0411, ext. 144. To get to Purple Woods Heritage Hall and Conservation Area take Simcoe Street north from Oshawa or south from Scugog and turn east onto Coates Road. (Google Map)
