2007/08 Environmental Education Program Guide
Booking Information

To request a reservation, please select the progam/s you are interested in from the In Our Watershed - Environmental Education Program Guide.

Appropriate Dress
The out of doors is an enjoyable place to learn if you are prepared. Proper dress is extremely important when outside anytime of the year. In order to maintain enthusiasm and to encourage learning, students should be dressed for the weather. Rain gear during wet periods, layered clothes on cool days, and of course complete winter gear for the cold weather. Winter dress should include hats, scarves, mitts and boots. Insect repellant, sun hats and sun screen are important on hot days.

Cost
General Programs: $4.00/student for half day or $8.00/student for full day
Minimum Fee: $50.00/program
Cancellation Fee: $25.00

Sugar Bush Tours: $2.25/student
Creek and Waterways Awareness: FREE
Durham Children’s Groundwater Festival: 2008 cost to be determined

Bring payment and permit with you the day of your program.

Doing it on your own
All of our Conservation Areas are available to classes wishing to conduct their own outdoor programs. Teachers are requested to call Central Lake Ontario Conservation during office hours for availability.

Grades: 4 - 6
Available: November - February
Location: In-school (One class per instructor)

Through the use of a video, discussion and hands on experiments, students will gain an understanding of how to avoid the dangers associated with playing near creeks in the winter and spring.

This is a 1 hour FREE presentation to schools within the Central Lake Ontario Conservation’s watersheds. Schools are asked to organize a minimum of 2 morning OR 2 afternoon classes. Limited to one class per 1 hour presentation.

A River Runs Through Us

Available: Fall, Spring
Location: In-school (One class per instructor)

If you have access to a natural area near your school, then this progam is for you. This is a customized program for individual schools within our watershed. It can be either 1 or 2 hours depending on the subject and number of participants. It is a great way to introduce students to the area around them.

Grades: 7 and 8
Available: year round
Location: In-school (One class per instructor)

Through the use of a hands-on model, video and overheads, students will discover how various land uses, such as urban development and agriculture, affect the watershed. They will identify factors that must be considered in making informed decisions about land use. The term “Geoscape” will be introduced to students to demonstrate geology and landscape features and to show how it influences watershed functions.

Location: Enniskillen CA (year round)
Heber Down CA (Fall, Spring)

This program will encourage students to become ecologically-aware citizens. Through a hike and activities from Project Wild, this interactive program explores the interrelation between personal and social choices. Students will gain an appreciation as to the importance of a healthy watershed in nature and how their actions impact the ecology of the watershed in which they live.

Grades: 4 - 8

Location: Enniskillen CA (year round)
Heber Down CA (Fall, Spring)

This student-centered activity will teach students how to read and interpret aerial orthophoto maps, and will help students learn how to take readings from a compass to navigate a basic orienteering course. Students will also be introduced to new GPS technology.

Available: Winter
Location: Enniskillen CA

Stay active in the winter by experiencing a simulated survival game. Through role-playing of predator- prey relationships, students will understand what it means to be part of a food chain. Major issues surrounding the continued existence of animals will be investigated including watershed health, climate change and human impacts.

Major Concepts: predator/prey relationships, food chains, life cycles, adaptations, interdependence of living things, human impact

While on a hike, students will use their five senses to discover the natural environment around them. Through hands-on investigation, explanation and stories, students will gain an understanding of a watershed, its function, and how plants and animals change with the seasons. This program can be combined with Life in a Pond.

Learn firsthand the function, structure and purpose of a pond and the larger watershed of which it is a part. Students, through hands-on pond dipping will explore life in a pond and discover how aquatic creatures live, breathe and move. Pond Exploration is a part of this program. Rubber boots or old shoes required. This program can be combined with Seasonal Changes in the Watershed.

During this program, students will explore the various interactions in a stream environment. They will gain an understanding of the role streams play in a watershed and how plants, animals, insects and people depend on healthy streams everyday. Stream exploration is a part of this program. Discover the elements of a healthy watershed and explore first hand the significant role wetlands play in our watershed. Through hands-on investigation, students will explore factors affecting wetlands including natural and human-induced changes. Students will also learn that wetlands contain an ecosystem consisting of a variety of plants and animals that are dependent on each other.

Major Concepts: wetlands, drainage impact, life cycles, aquatic communities, human impact, erosion and flooding

From trees to mosses, students will become familiar with a variety of amazing plants in their local environment. An exploration of plant structures, functions and properties will be undertaken.

Available: March 17 - April 4
Location: Purple Woods CA

Students will travel through time to learn about the history of maple syrup, from its discovery by the First Nations, to the changes made by the European settlers to current methods of production. During the presentation, other topics covered include; how maple trees produce sap, tapping methods, traditions and celebrations and the importance of the Oak Ridges Moraine and its forests.

education photo Durham Children's Groundwater Festival

An annual event held at Camp Samac during the last week of September. This festival was launched as part of the Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority’s 40th Anniversary theme of “Water Quality” in October 1998, the goal of the Festival is to increase the awareness of Grade 4 students concerning water issues and motivate them to become water stewards in their home, classroom and community. The Festival consists of over 30 hands-on, learning centres that are designed to compliment the Ontario Curriculum expectations.
