Maple Syrup Interpreters (2 positions)
Seasonal (Purple Woods Maple Syrup Festival)
This is a seasonal position, required to work during the Purple Woods Maple Syrup Festival and the Sugar Bush Tours school program from Feb 24 to April 9, including some weekends, to deliver interpretive and education programs. A mandatory half-day training and orientation session is planned for Saturday March 1, 2025.
The Maple Syrup Interpreter is responsible for working at the interpretive maple syrup stops at Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority’s annual Purple Woods Maple Syrup Festival and assisting with the delivery of the elementary school Sugar Bush Tours offered Monday to Friday (subject to availability and need).
All Maple Syrup Interpreters report to the Education Instructor. The employee is expected to report for work as per the schedule as start, end times and days off will vary. Workdays will be scheduled to support school programs Monday to Friday outside of festival days. The festival’s hours of operation are 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Responsibilities:
The Interpreter is responsible for describing the maple syrup story in this region. This role requires a verbal presentation and demonstration of historical props to re-enact the history of maple syrup. The Maple Syrup Interpreter will also be required to assist with the daily set-up and take down of displays, contribute to general housekeeping duties and promote Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority as a lead agency in watershed protection and stewardship.
The Maple Syrup Interpreter will be provided with scripts to practice their presentation skills as part of a half-day training and orientation session. They will also be required to complete a mandatory online health and safety and personnel training session. This position requires the individual to stand and work in an outdoor environment about 90 per cent of the time.
Qualifications:
1) Excellent customer service and communication skills.
2) Experience working with children an asset.
3) Comfortable speaking to large groups (30 – 40).
2) Theatre and acting experience are an asset.
3) Able to work in a fast-paced environment.
4) Able to work alone or with a partner.
5) Fluent in English, a second language is an asset.
6) Knowledge of maple syrup production and history, and previous experience interpreting is an asset.
7) Vulnerable Sector check required.
Wages and Benefits:
$20 per hour
